Thank you for choosing Mercy. To help make your experience with us as comfortable as possible, we hope this page will answer some of your questions about being a patient at Mercy.
Medication Card
While you’re in the hospital, it’s very important for you to let your doctors and nurses know all the medicines you are taking – both prescription and over-the-counter, as well as vitamins and herbal supplements. For your convenience, Mercy offers a free wallet-size medication card where you can list all of these and other relevant information. You can ask your nurse for one, or download a PDF copy that you can print, cut and fold.
Cafeterias
• The Mercy State Street cafeteria is located on level B1, across from the elevators.
• Fore River Café is located at Mercy Fore River, off the main lobby.
• Café Westbrook is located at Mercy Westbrook.
For hours and more details, please see our Cafeteria page.
Room Service
At Mercy Fore River we offer room service from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm and at State Street from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, seven days a week. Patients may order by phone from a menu available in their room. Their meal will be freshly prepared by a Mercy chef and delivered within 45 minutes by a Food Services hostess.
Cellular Phones
For safety and privacy reasons, the use of cellular telephones and 2-way radios is not permitted in patient care areas.
Fire Alarms
Our fire alarm system is tested regularly. Tests or drills will be announced over the public address system and small strobe lights will flash in the corridors. During these drills or suspected fires, many doors will close automatically, or will be closed. This includes the door to your room. Please do not be alarmed, as the doors can be opened manually. In the case of an actual fire, hospital staff will assist you in evacuation procedures.
Flowers and Mail
Flowers from family and friends will be brought to your room soon after they are delivered to the hospital. Volunteers will deliver your mail in the early afternoon. Reading materials to help pass the time are available through our Volunteer Department Monday through Friday – call 879-3286 for more information.
Pastoral Care
Our Pastoral Care department provides chaplaincy coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Any of the chaplains may be contacted by calling 879-3358. You may also ask your nurse, or call the hospital operator at 879-3000 and ask to have the on-call chaplain paged.
St. Joseph’s Chapel

Telephones
There are telephones in each patient room. Family and friends may call you directly by dialing the telephone number posted on your phone. To ensure that all patients get the rest they need, incoming telephone service is available between 7:00 am and 10:00 pm. In special circumstances, callers can reach you between the hours of 10:00 pm and 7:00 am by calling the nurses’ station on your floor.
Patient Care Team
Physicians
Your physician is responsible for directing your care while you are in the hospital. As the coordinator of your medical care, he or she should be consulted if you have questions about your illness or treatment. Your physician may request other medical specialists to help evaluate and treat your condition, but he or she is still responsible for your overall care in the hospital and after discharge.
Hospitalists
In recent years, many leading hospitals around the country, including Mercy, have added hospitalists to their care team. These physicians are specially trained to manage the challenges of hospital inpatients and all are able to assume responsibility for patients while they are in the hospital. At the request of your primary care physician – and working alongside physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other health professionals – a hospitalist will coordinate your care while you are in the hospital and keep your primary physician informed about your progress. He or she will return you to the care of your primary physician when you leave the hospital. Hospitalists also care for patients who may not have a primary care provider when they are admitted to the hospital.
Nursing Staff
The Mercy philosophy recognizes the true worth, dignity, and spirituality of each individual and his or her family. We believe that all patients deserve nursing care that is well planned, continuously evaluated, and constantly monitored by a registered nurse, working collaboratively with all medical providers to develop and oversee a personalized plan of care. The nursing care team consists of registered nurses, certified nursing assistants, and unit coordinators; there is also a comprehensive care management team consisting of registered nurses/discharge planners, and social workers involved in facilitating the best outcomes for patients and their families. In every case, our goal is to exceed patient and family expectations in care delivery.
Customer Relations
The Customer Relations manager works closely with all departments of the hospital to provide patient-focused service and compassionate support with the goal of making people healthy. If you would like to speak with the Customer Relations manager, please call (207) 879-3286.
