At Mercy’s Interventional Radiology Center, we provide compassionate care and expertise in imaging guided procedures. We work in collaboration with community physicians and other providers, and are part of Mercy’s Cardiology Practice, which is dedicated to excellence in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular disease.Using imaging technology, we perform a wide range of procedures to assist in diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders.
Using state-of-the-art imaging technology, Mercy’s Interventional Radiology Center performs thousands of minimally invasive procedures every year.
Our patients also benefit from our emphasis on treating the whole person, providing them with a continuum of care and medical management of conditions such as diabetes, renal vascular disease, chronic wounds, and venous insufficiency.
The general advantages of Interventional Radiology compared to surgery are:
- Most procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis or require only a short hospital stay
- General anesthesia is not required
- Risk, pain, and recovery time are often significantly reduced
Some of the most common procedures we provide are:
Peripheral Arterial Disease Treatments
Angioplasty, stenting, and atherectomy are used to treat blocked blood vessels in the peripheral arteries without surgery. Often there is no hospitalization and patients return to normal activity shortly after the procedure.
Chemoembolization
A minimally invasive, palliative treatment for liver cancer. A catheter is inserted into the femoral artery and threaded into the artery that feeds the tumor, enabling injection of chemotherapeutic drugs directly into the liver and mixing with particles that embolize the arteries, blocking blood flow to the tumor.
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)
Fibroid tumors are benign tumors that grow in the uterus, often diagnosed during a gynecologic exam and confirmed by ultrasound or MRI. Approximately 35% of women over the age of 35 experience symptoms of fibroid tumors including bleeding, pain, swelling, infertility and pressure on the bladder. Using a catheter inserted through the femoral artery that releases tiny particles into the uterine arteries, blocking the blood flow to the fibroid tumor, uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a non-surgical alternative to treatments such as hysterectomies and myomectomies, usually resulting in shorter recovery times, reduction in fibroid size, and resolution of symptoms. A follow-up ultrasound is done within 3 months of the embolization, at which time most patients have experienced a decrease or absence of symptoms. Endovenous Laser Treatment of Varicose Veins
A thin catheter is inserted into the affected vein, and using imaging technology, is guided into the great saphenous vein. Laser or radiofrequency energy is applied to the inside of the vein, which heats and seals the vein. With the vein closed, other healthy veins take over blood flow.
Other procedures offered at Mercy’s Interventional Radiology Center include:
- Diagnostic angiography
- Hemodialysis and other venous access device placements, including central lines, PICCs, and mediports
- Organ biopsy
- Infection drainage and management
- Feeding tube replacement
