McAuley Residence provides a safe environment and a comprehensive transitional housing program – offering life skills, counseling, emotional support, and mentoring – to women and children in need. McAuley Residence staff works closely with the experts at the Mercy’s Recovery Center to provide focused substance abuse treatment as women embrace sobriety and develop the skills necessary to flourish. McAuley Residence is guided by the Sisters of Mercy philosophy of compassionate care for all, with special concern for disadvantaged women and children.
We serve a diverse group of women whose primary concern is addiction and have experienced one or more situations of homelessness, substance abuse, domestic violence, broken relationships, mental health issues, or incarceration. Women come from all over the state of Maine and either apply on their own or are referred through community agencies.
At McAuley Residence women commit to acquiring the skills to make positive, lasting life changes, taking proactive steps to achieve their individual educational, career, and parenting goals – assisted by a professional clinical and administrative staff who provide comprehensive one-on-one and group services to help them achieve those goals. This supportive program includes:
- Access to health and dental care
- Life skills counseling, including budgeting and debt repayment, healthy lifestyle, decision-making, self-advocacy, and time and home management
- Guidance about securing affordable permanent housing
- Education about resources available from other community-based agencies
- Connections to partner organizations with expertise in mental health services, career exploration, and parenting
Each of the six apartments at McAuley Residence has a bedroom, living room, kitchen, and full bath. There is also a family room, children’s playroom, meeting room, backyard, and laundry facilities, providing common space that promotes a sense of community and shared responsibility. Three staff members provide individual and group services geared toward developing a healthy environment in which residents learn to support and grow with one another.
